"That eight of our finest educators have received awards for teaching excellence from such an eminent institute is evidence of the high quality of teaching at Macquarie."

AUSTRALIA CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF RECONCILIATION...
Australia is trying hard to build bridges to reconciliation, for the 40th anniversary of the historic 1967 Referendum, which brought about the constitutional recognition of Indigenous people. Griffith University is among the most active institutions to have launched its Statement on Reconciliation last month by publishing "Unintended Consequences" that explores what happens when things don't go according to plan - politically and personally. It examines both the unplanned triumphs and the unexpected failures, with a particular focus on indigenous relations.
Forty years after the 1967 referendum recognised the first Australians as full citizens, Noel Pearson - Australia's most innovative and effective Aboriginal leader - breaks new ground and eloquently advocates an agenda that learns from the mistakes of the past.
Some of the best writers and thinkers in Australia go beyond simple explanations and conspiracy theories to examine how unintended consequences shape our lives and our canon of heroes. Murray Sayle considers how journalism can turn myths into reality, as he reflects for the first time on his chance encounters with Che Guevara in Cuba and the Bolivian jungle.
This collection moves from the big issues - war, bureaucracy, epidemics, planning and media - to compelling and quirky personal tales that reveal the long-term impact of small decisions. We are surrounded by unintended consequences.
Other writers include: Rolf de Heer and Molly Reynolds, James Halford and Glyn Davis.
Examples of essays: Essay 1, Essay 2 , Essay 3, Essay 4, Essay 5, Essay 6

Four Australian Universities Ranked in Top 50!
Australian universities have a world-class approach to science, medicine and engineering, according to a new ranking by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economics and Social Research that places four of the nation's institutions in the international top 50.
It is the first year that the Melbourne Institute has ranked Australian universities by disciplines alone. The seven fields were humanities, business and economics, education, engineering, law, medicine and science.
The University of Melbourne, The University of Sydney, UNSW and ANU appear in the top 50 in at least one of these areas. The University of Queensland (Education, Engineering and Medicine) and Monash University (Engineering and Medicine) appear in the top 100 for performance. ANU was the leader in Science, the only Australian university to appear in the top 50 for this field, while the University of Melbourne was the stand-out in Medicine and Business.

According to a recent survey organised by "Lonely Planet Travellers", Australia is the favourite destination for the 2nd year in a row with more than 10% of respondents preferring it above all others, for breaks longer than 1 week. The reasons for it is the iconic nature of Australia, its placement as a long-haul English-speaking sunshine destination and its affordability, not only among world travellers but also among Australians themselves...

MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY LEADING THE WAY IN SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Macquarie has just held a forum on the ‘greening’ of Higher Education programs with senior academics and sustainability leaders from four leading international universities in order to share their experiences in making higher education practices more ecologically aware.
The objective is that universities need to initiate dialogue between different fields of research since Universities have played a critical role in destabilising the environment by teaching traditional models of natural resource exploitation. It is then important for universities to acknowledge their role in the consumption process and provide new visions for sustainable development.
this is an initiative of ARIES, the Australian Research Institute in Education for Sustainability.

THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY ranked among world's top 50!!!
The University of Sydney has been ranked as one of the world's top 50 universities in the latest survey of global universities.
The Newsweek global top 100 published this month has ranked universities from around the world taking into account openness and diversity, as well as distinction in research.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Gavin Brown said that although there was no evaluation of quality of teaching or the all-round student experience, the Newsweek rankings were the most realistic of the growing number of global league tables.
In the recently published Shanghai Jiao Tong University's league table of the top 500, which gives special weighting to Nobel Prize winners, the University of Sydney is ranked equal third of the Australian universities in the category 101 to 150.
The Newsweek analysis is based on the number of highly-cited researchers, the number of articles published in nature and Science and the number of articles published in the ISI Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities indices. Newsweek also takes into account the percentage of international faculty, percentage of international students, citations per staff member (using ISI data), the ratio of faculty to students and the size of library holdings.

Rally Against Racism! It's time for ALL Australians and their international friends to Unite Against Racism!
Boomerangaustralia.com is supporting this march "United against racism" and invite you all to join together this coming Sunday 18th Dec, 1pm, Townhall Sydney, to protest against the "white supremacist" racist burst of Violence last weekend in Cronulla. It's time that the countless thousands of Sydney-siders who DID NOT like what they saw last weekend in Cronulla took the streets to make their voice heard. We need to send the strongest possible message to the rest of Australia and the world that we do not support this kind of behaviour.
