Sydney Opera House gains World Heritage status

At a meeting of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee in New Zealand today, the committee voted to add an Australian icon to the list. The Sydney Opera House, designed by Joern Utzon and officially opened in October 1973, is the youngest building to be included on the World Heritage list and only the second by a living architect. The World Heritage Committee recognised the Sydney Opera House as a daring and visionary experiment, resulting in an unparalleled building that defied categorisation and found an original style, in which to express civic values in monumental public buildings. CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SURF LIFE SAVING

In 1907, Bondi Beach in Sydney created the first concept in the world of Surf Life Saving based on the principle of Volonteering and military efficiency and training. 100 years later, the concept is not only current but has become a cult feature in the Australian culture. The Australian Government has announced 2007 will be the 'Year of the Surf Lifesaver' (YSL) to recognise the centenary of Surf Life Saving in Australia. Therefore an extensive array of celebrations and commemorative events is being planned across the nation. En 1907, Bondi Beach Sydney créa le premier concept dans le monde du Surf Life Saving, qui est basé sur le principe du Volontariat et d'une efficacité et entrainement militaires!. SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE CELEBRATES ITS 75th ANNIVERSARY

Did you know that in 2007 Sydney Harbour Bridge celebrates its diamond anniversary?? The premier of New South Wales, Jack Lang, opened it in March 1932. For this occasion, the City of Sydney has commemorated this important event at the fire work on NYE by illuminating the bridge with a giant golden diamond and a red coathanger (for those who don't know, this is the harbour's nickname!)that are appearing everyday now until the end of January from dusk till midnight .
Dont' miss either the exhibition held at the Museum of Sydney telling the whole story of the bridge.

Saviez-vous qu'en 2007 le Pont de Sydney célèbre ses 75 ans?? Le président des Nouvelles Galles du Sud, Jack Lang, inaugura le pont en mars 1932. Pour cette occasion, la ville de Sydney a voulu commémorer cet évènement important lors du feu d'artifice du Nouvel An en illuminant le pont d'un diamant doré et d'un cintre rouge géants (pour ceux qui ne savent pas, le cintre est le symbole du pont!) tous les jours de maintenant à la fin janvier du crépuscule à minuit. Ne pas manquer également l'exposition sur l'histoire du pont au Museum of Sydney.

GREAT NEWS ABOUT THE WOOL INDUSTRY IN AUSTRALIA

Clothes that can moisturise the skin, repel insects, stretch, and keep wearers warm or cool are being developed by Australia's wool industry.
Australia is the world's biggest wool exporter but the fibre is not as popular as it once was. Australia produces 460 million kilograms of wool annually, half the amount of 15 years ago.
Already available are a machine-washable wool-blend suit, wool for sports clothing that can stretch, suits with microcapsules that change form between liquid and solid, depending on temperature, to keep wearers warmer or cooler.
Nanotechnology is being used to put silver into woollen fabric so it becomes resistant to bacteria and moths. A quick-drying merino fibre has also been developed. And last of all, fragrant merino clothing has been permeated with microscopic capsules of aloe vera so that during wear, abrasion breaks open the capsules, gradually releasing the moisturiser.

Des nouvelles importantes sur l'industrie de la laine en Australie
L’industrie de la laine en Australie est en train de developer des vetements qui puissent hydratrer la peau, chasser les insectes, se stretcher, et de tenir chaud ou rafraichir.
L’Australie est l’exporteur de laine le plus important du monde mais la fibre n’est plus aussi populaire qu’avant. L’Australie produit 460.000 tonnes de laine/an, la moitié de ce qu’elle produisait il y a 15 ans.
Il existe déjà des costumes en laine lavables en machine, des vêtements de sports en laine qui peuvent se stretcher, des costumes en microcapsules qui changent de forme de liquide à solide, selon la température ambiante, afin de tenir au chaud ou rafraichir celui qui porte le vêtement.
La nanotechnologie a été utilisée pour introduire de l’argent dans les tissues en laine pour qu’ils deviennent résistants aux bactéries et mites. Une fibre merino qui sèche rapidement a également été développée. Des capsules microscopiques d’aloe vera qui s’ouvrent au frottement et dégagent un liquide hydratant ont été intégrés dans des vêtements en merino.

DROUGHT IN AUSTRALIA - RECORDS DE SECHERESSE EN AUSTRALIE

Australia’s drought is rewriting record books, with experts saying that the country is facing a climate event not seen in a millennium. Although claims that Australia is in the grip of a one-in-a-thousand-year drought cannot be substantiated by data, specialists agree that this dry spell is the worst on record, at least as severe as the drought of 1895-1903.
We are asking everybody on the Australian soil to use water with care.

L'australie est en train de subir une sécheresse extrême, au point de battre tous ses records! Les experts disent que ce pays est en train de connaitre un climat non vécu depuis un millennium. Certaines rumeurs prédisent que l'Australie est en proie de subir une sécheresse d'une rare intensité. Cependant bien que de récentes statistiques ne confirment pas ces faits, les spécialistes aquiescent que la sécheresse en rigueur est la pire que l'Australie a connu, encore plus sévère que celle dévastatrice des années 1895-1903. Nous demandons à tous ceux se trouvant sur le territoire Australien d'utiliser l'eau avec modération pour préserver un maximum ce beau pays qu’est l’Australie.

THE ENVIRONMENT ISSUE IN AUSTRALIA

Did you know that Australia has not signed the Kyoto Agreement yet!!?? The global warming effects are already damaging Australia and its wonderful landscape that is seriously suffering from severe droughts and a high salinity level in the land. Private initiatives are taking place and on 31 March, the operation 60 EARTH HOUR will come into vigor in Sydney. A university Griffith student has convinced WWWF, the city of Sydney and the Sydney Morning Herald to cut the electricity in the whole of Sydney for 60 minutes on 31 March 2007 from 7.30 pm AEST in order to cut Sydney's greenhouse gas emission produced by cars by 5%, office lighting by 80% and households consumption (air conditioning, water use...) by March 2008. This will lead the fight to incite other cities to follow forth and apply the same initiative. Boomerang Australia Studies is supporting this initiative so do the same and spread the info around. Saviez-vous que l'Australie n'a pas encore signé l'accord de Kyoto!!?? Pourtant les effets du réchauffement de la planète a déjà affecté l'Australie et ses paysages extraordinaires par des sécheresses de plus en plus sévères et un niveau élevé de salinité du sol. Heureusement des initiatives privées prennent place et le 31 mars prochain, l'opération "60 EARTH HOUR" sera en vigueur à Sydney. Une étudiante de l'université de Griffith a convaincu le WWWF, la ville de Sydney et le Sydney Morning Herald de couper toute source d'électricité dans toute la ville de Sydney pour 60 minutes le 31 Mars 2007 à 19h30 afin de réduire à Sydney la propagation de l'effet de serre produit par les voitures (de 5%), consommation d'électricité des compagnies (de 80%) et consommation des ménages (acclim, eau...) d'ici Mars 2008. It has always appeared a bit old fashion, so 2 young Australians, Mike Etheridge and Tiffany Preece decided to create an internet radio from 28 August this year that will modernise the perception of country music in Australia and bury its old-school image. AUSTRALIAN CINEMA

Australian Cinema is at its peak this year with an important collection of high quality films on the market since June 2006: don't miss "Jyndabyne", "The book of Revelation", "Candy", "2.37", "Kenny" et "Footy Legend".
The emergence of Aboriginal themes in movies is also a very healthy sign, especially this year when the stories are written and acted by aboriginal natives themselves: it includes "10 canoes" (Infos) was officially part of the official selection at the Festival de Cannes and "Kanyini" (Infos), out at the end of August 2006.

CROCODILE MAN

One of the most famous Australian character, Steve Irwin died yesterday while diving and filming at 44 years old. A very controversial and wild man, often referred as the Crocodile Man, Steve was well known for his fondness for dangerous animals and especially for crocodiles. A keen nature conservationist, he is one of the last adventurers, an Australian symbol of courage, appearing on TV in incredible situations... Un des charactères les plus reconnus en Australie, Steve Irwin est décédé hier à l'age de 44 ans. Steve, homme un peu controversé et sauvage, souvent référé comme l'Homme Crocodile, il était réputé pour sa fascination pour les animaux dangereux, surtout les crocodiles. Un protecteur de la nature invétéré, il est l'un des derniers aventuriers, un symbol Australien de courage, souvent vu à la télé dans des situations impossibles...
