Migration to Australia
Introduction
Come and live in Australia needs preparation! The distance and time difference can be an obstacle knowing that your options will depend on your visa category.

We have tried to sum up the simplest options for you to allow you to live and stay in Australia on a temporary or permanent basis.
^
Our advice
- Before starting all visa procedures, we recommend you to test life in Australia on a temporary basis, to make sure that you won’t come back on your decision. Because a new life in Australia may involve consequent costs and an eventual cultural shock (even if Australia is based on a European settlement, it has its own characteristics!)

- If English is not your native language, you cannot pretend to the same job position and salary unless you are an expat or sponsored. A period of adaptation will be necessary, that can last from a few weeks to several months, according to your personality and the reason why you came to Australia. To make it shorter, don’t overestimate your job opportunities. However the principal advantage in Australia is that it is easy to be promoted and double your salary in a short time if you start a position at a lower level and you prove yourself.

- Don’t rush to sign a rental agreement for a house or apartment before leaving your home country. It is wiser to organize an appointment with real estate agencies and visit the properties of interest for you, while in Australia, staying at a temporary accommodation. We can help you book your accommodation.

Live in Australia permanently
The only solution is to ask for the permanent residency that allows you to be a citizen of Australia within 2 years (you must have stayed this length of time on the Australian territory, all absence being deducted from the 2 years). Enquire in your own country if you can apply for dual citizenship or not.

Attention: you can lose your permanent residency if you leave away from Australia for a long time whereas the Australian citizenship is for life wherever you will live.

1) You already have the permanent residency in Australia: you have the same rights as Australian citizens apart from the right to vote and receive certain allowances within 8 months following your arrival. You can have access to Medicare (the Australian national health system). The education system is as follows: primary and secondary education is divided into public and private schools (either catholic or independent). Be aware that kids don’t start school before 6 years old. Consequently if both parents work, you have to send your children to Pre-schools and Child Care centers: they are well represented all around Australian but privately run and thus very expensive!! Higher education at vocational or university level also attracts fees (minimum AU$5.000 per year for universities and minimum AU$700 to 1,000 for vocational training). It does not include book materials, sport activities, uniforms….
Please refer to our section “Studies in Australia” on our Boomerang Australia Studies website where we explain in detail the education system in Australia .

2) You don’t have yet the permanent residency in Australia: You have several opportunities and procedures are time consuming. Find below the main permanent visas you can apply for:
- The Spouse Visa: if you can prove you have lived over 12 months with your de facto spouse who is either an Australian resident or an Australian citizen, or if you have married an Australian resident or an Australian citizen, you can apply for this visa in Australia and receive an answer within one month; if you apply overseas it may take longer. Be aware that this visa is a temporary visa that will become permanent if you can prove that you are still in a genuine relationship 2 years later.
- The Skills Migration Visa: it is based on a point system whose criteria depend on your age, family history, professional experience and level of English. There will be some consequent changes from 1 September 2007 that will favour applicants with a high level of English.
- The sponsored Visa: if you have family members or relatives in Australia (such as uncle, aunt, grand-parents) who are willing to sponsor you financially, you may benefit from special conditions.
- The Family Reunion Visa: if over 50% of your children are Australian residents or citizens and if your health is satisfactory, you can join your children in Australia and become a permanent resident.
- Business Owners: applies if you intend to establish a company or invest a large amount in a company as a major shareholder.

Conditions are complex and keep changing constantly. Therefore we recommend you to use the services of experts in the field. Lawyers are not particularly expert in Australian immigration matters and we advise you to consult Australian migration agents registered by MARA or MIA.

As you will see, the list is long and quality migration agent carce, so we have selected a professional migration agency based in Australia. In order to assess your chances, please fill in this form and send it back to us by email to: executive@boomerangaustralia.com.

Live in Australia temporarily
You have a few options:
- You are an expat: generally your company takes charge of all costs linked to travel and accommodation. You won’t be covered by Medicare and we advise you to have an exhaustive insurance before leaving your home country, the health related costs being really high in Australia. Please refer to our section Insurance for further details. If you decide later to stay permanently in Australia, you may not be able to apply for the permanent residency. To help you know your chances, please fill in this form and send it back to us by email to: executive@boomerangaustralia.com.
- You are sponsored by an Australian company: according to its category, your sponsorship contract can be renewed. Otherwise be aware that this status does not guarantee the permanent residency. To help you know your chances, please fill in this form and send it back to us by email to: executive@boomerangaustralia.com.
- You are alone: if you are under 30 years old, we advise you to apply for the Working Holiday visa that allows you to improve your English skills and work full time in Australia for 1 year; if you are over 30 years old, the only solution is the student visa that allows you to study (English or vocational or university courses) while working. To know the conditions of both visas, please refer to our section Visas. To know more about your study opportunities, please refer to our section Training in Australia. At expiration both visas will allow you to apply for the permanent residency. Please contact us before any visa expires to know your chances.
- You are a couple: if you are both under 30 years old, we advise you to apply for the Working Holiday visa that allows you to improve your English skills and work full time in Australia for 1 year; if you are over 30 years old, the only solution is the student visa that allows you to study (English or vocational or university courses) while working. The advantage of the student visa is that one of the spouse (married or not) can study while the other one can be a “dependent” and work without having to study, and you only pay for one visa. To know the conditions of both visas, please refer to our section Visas. To know more about your study opportunities, please refer to our section Training in Australia. At expiration both visas will allow you to apply for the permanent residency. Please contact us before any visa expires to know your chances.
- You are a family: the cheapest solution for you is the student visa that allows you to bring your family with you during the duration you have determined, knowing that the course you have selected must cover this duration ; one of the parents will study a full time course (English or vocational or university) and work, while the other spouse will be “dependent” , will be able to work without having to study but the children will have to be registered in a school in Australia. Without any evidence of schooling for your children, you won’t be granted the student visa. To know the conditions of this visas, please refer to our section Visas. To know more about your study opportunities, please refer to our section Training in Australia. At expiration this visa will allow you to apply for the permanent residency. Please contact us before your visa expires to know your chances.
- Investors Visa: this applies if you intend to invest a large amount of money in Australia either in a company or a fund or research and development projects. You can stay in Australia and live like an expat or under a sponsorship visa as long as your money is invested in Australia. If you decide to stay permanently in Australia, be aware that this status does not guarantee the permanent residency. To be able to assess your chances for the permanent residency, thanks for filling in this form and send it back to us by email to: executive@boomerangaustralia.com.

Our tips
- The “Automobile Clubs” : in Australia, they are part of the culture and really convenient! You pay an annual membership of around AU$75 and it gives you the right to their “Roadside assistance”, meaning that if you r car breaks, they come to help you for free, unless they have to change some items. Mechanics are really expensive in Australia so if you drive around a lot or if you don’t know much about mechanics, this is really worthwhile considering being a member. You just have to call them and they will come wherever you are!! They are named differently according to the state you are in: NRMA in NSW, RACV in Victoria, RACQ in Queensland…

- Drivers license :your don’t need to reseat the tests again in Australia, a translation into English by the relevant transport office in your state is enough. However if you are resident and plan to stay permanently in Australia, you’d better reseat the code and the driving tests.
Particularities: each state has its own code and drivers license; you have to pay for your license and it has to be renewed every year or 2 or 5 or 10 years, the cost depending on the duration you have chosen for your drivers license; you have to bring your own vehicle to the driving test. In Australia, your drivers license is used as an ID!
